Finding Great Massage Referral Partners

handshake_border_150by100.jpgSo, how do you go about finding great referral partners? Good question. Let’s start by looking at the essential qualities to look for in the ideal referral partner. Here is an easy way to remember. They must be PERP!

The P stands for Purposeful. They must have services (or products) that are purposeful for your target market. There has to be a connection with the people in the community that you are drawn to serve.

In other words, they have the same target market as you, but offer services that are different but complimentary to your own.

For example, if your target market is pregnant women, referral partners could be maternity clothing store owners, midwives, Lamaze instructors, obgyn doctors, pre-natal exercise instructors, and any professional or business that serves pregnant women.

Next I will share with you the other essential qualities to look for in an ideal referral partner for your massage business. Till then…

Dari Haffie is This Week’s Guest on Massage Success Radio

Ashi_no_border.jpg

Today’s guest on Massage Successs Radio is Dari Haffie of Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy.

I “met” her when I recently interviewed her for an upcoming AMTA-WA convention, where we will both be speakers.

What primarily intrigued me about her work is that I saw it as an excellent way to achieve longevity in a profession that traditionally puts quite a bit of stress on the hands and wrists.

Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy has been quoted as “The most luxurious deep tissue massage on the planet”. And what makes this type of deep tissue massage different from most – is that you do it with your feet.

Dari is one of only 10 trainers of this style of bodywork.

In today’s interview we discussed:

  • What makes this technique different from other barefoot techniques.
  • The types of therapists this work might be best suited for.
  • Why you use your feet? What’s wrong with hands?
  • What exercises would help you prepare to be a practitioner of this technique.
  • The role of overhead bars in Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy.
  • Ways to diversify your practice and market your massage business.

So if you are interested in learning about a technique that may extend the life of your career (by using your hands less) as well as making you stand out from the other massage therapists in your area, go here to listen.

Last Minute Holiday Certificate Sales

christmas_cert.jpg

We just got a call from a client who wanted to buy some massage gift certificates, but she needed them right away.

So we emailed her, and attached a file for a gift certificate that she could simply print right from her own computer.

You could do this too. It is not too late to make money from gift certificate sales. There are many folks out there stuck with ideas for last minute gifts.

If you don’t already have a digital certificate, here is one that you can use. Simply download it to a file on your computer, and then it is ready to attach to an email. Make sure the person who purchases it knows to fill out any information needed (ie the number to call to schedule, the expiration date if that applies to you).

As for payment, the simplest way is for them to pay you by credit card if you accept them. If it is a regular client you trust, you can also have them mail you a check. If you like, you can tell them the certificate won’t be “activated” until you receive payment.

You could also print these out yourself to use in your practice. So, if you are looking for some last minute, attractive, inexpensive (free!!! – other that the paper to print them out) massage Christmas gift certificates that then look no further. Here you are. My gift to you. Free Massage Christmas Gift Certificates. Enjoy.

The Myth of Motivation

motivation_carrot_sm.jpg

I was reading an article by Ken Keis of Consulting Resource Group on The Myth of Motivation and he made a comment I found interesting. He said:

The pursuit of our interests requires no motivation because we enjoy doing them. Interests compel us; to compel means to be pulled or attracted. That precludes the need for motivation. We require motivation only for things that do not interest us. If we need motivation, we must question why we do.

Now, I’m sure that doesn’t mean that we will love every aspect of building a successful massage business. I for one am not a big fan of bookkeeping. But I think it’s true that it is really hard to motivate yourself to do something that you just don’t enjoy.

So if you find you are having a hard time marketing your massage business, maybe take a look at what you are doing. For example, I had a client who was trying unsuccessfully to build her business by public speaking as she had heard that was a great way to get massage clients. And it is! But she hated it (and it was definitely not one of her natural talents).

But it turned out she really enjoyed writing AND she had a real knack for it. So I suggested she focus her marketing efforts on writing articles in local publications instead. And her massage business really took off.

So, if you find you are having a hard time motivating yourself as you build your business, look at what you are doing, and see if there is another approach that includes things that you really enjoy. Then motivation will no longer be an issue.

Looking for Inexpensive Ways to Get More Massage Clients?

Today on Massage Success Radio I interviewed massage therapist Luata Bray from Seattle, WA .

We talked about:

  • The primary way she gets new massage clients.
  • How she built her “sphere of influence”.
  • “The Front Desk Policy” and how she used it to get a client that stayed for 8 years.
  • Using complimentary massages to build your business.
  • Things that a therapist can do to get more clients that don’t cost a lot of money.

You won’t want to miss it so pop on over to Massage Success Radio and have a listen.

What a Great Idea!

bulb_sm.gif

I just returned from a wonderful conference especially for entrepreneurs in Dallas, TX called the Idea Incubator. The whole 4 days was focused around taking your ideas from concept to cash.

How many times a day to you have an idea that could bring more money into your massage business? For example, you could teach a seminar, write an eBook or develop an eCourse on a subject you know a lot about.

Or you could link from your massage website (if you have one) to other sites that have complementary products you recommend to your clients anyway, and make money on the commissions (like with amazon.com).

So many ideas… so little time!

Anyway, on my blog over the next few days and weeks I’ll be sharing in detail some of what I learned that applies to running a massage business. So, if you’ve ever thought that it would be nice to have some additional streams of income coming in, and you’d like to know how, do check back.

The Secret to Financial Prosperity

When thinking about being wealthy it can bring up all kinds of uncomfortable feelings because of our past financial conditioning (especially all the stuff we heard as a kid about money not growing on trees. Duh!).

Bob Proctor, one of my mentors, says that the secret to financial prosperity is that we have to work through those uncomfortable feelings and not let them stop us. And once you learn how to do that in the area of money, you can apply the same principles to any area of your life.

Maybe you feel uncomfortable marketing and promoting yourself, or are uncomfortable with the concept of selling your massage services or products.

Or maybe what you really, really want is nothing to do with your massage business at all! Maybe you want to find that ideal life partner or soul mate. But the uncomfortable feelings come up when you even think about it. You know… the negative self-talk… that little voice that tells you all the reasons why it will never happen to YOU.

So the reason I believe that the book The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattles (see left side bar) inspired the movie The Secret, was simply because when you put these timeless principles into place THEY WORK, and they apply to anything you want to manifest, not just money. Hence…. “the secret”.

And from watching the folks interviewed on The Secret, you do get to where the uncomfortable feelings become comfortable. As Bob Proctor has pointed out to me, wealthy people are very comfortable talking about money. But they didn’t all start out that way.

Growing up in my family, money was never discussed in public except in arguments. How about you?

Please, please don’t do this!

It happened again today and it drives me crazy. You know, when you get one of those “forwarded” emails. And up there in the “TO” field is my preciously guarded personal email address along with about 50 others, all exposed for me and all the world to see. This is very bad email etiquette.

All I have to do is hit “reply all” or cut and paste and I have access to all the addresses on this person’s email list. The bad news is that this is all anyone else on the list has to do to capture mine. It is one of the reasons that I am being inundated with spam, even on the email addresses I guard the most closely.

To protect yourself, if you don’t already, you might want to consider setting up a freebie “throw-away” email address with yahoo, hotmail or something similar that you use exclusively in online forms and public places. That way it is not too much of a pain to change it when the spam gets to be too much.

But then, when I see my private address on one of these forwarded emails I get really mad. Please don’t do this! Folks won’t like it. Especially if you are sending your massage client newsletter this way. There is a proper way to do it and protect everyone’s privacy.

The correct way is to send the email to yourself in the “TO” address, then BCC (blind carbon copy) it to your list. In Outlook you “right click” on the “CC” (carbon copy) button and chose “BCC”. Then you just put everyone’s address in the “BCC” field. Each email program is slightly different, but they will all have this feature (or get another one!)

This way the email still goes to everyone, but it protects the privacy of everyone concerned as each person only sees their own address in the “TO” field and not everyone else’s.

Your friends and clients will thank you for it.
