It’s Happening Tonight… don’t Miss It!

Be sure to schedule 90 minutes out of your evening tonight (October 25th, 2011) as the last of the World Massage Conference 2011 Encore Presentations is happening and you won’t want to miss it. And it’s FREE!

I, along with three other renowned massage marketing experts, will be discussing The Three R’s of Increasing Your Practice Income. And coincidently, although unrelated, we all have the same last name! Eric Brown, Todd Brown, Felicia Brown and me, Elizabeth Fletcher-Brown

You can join us at the FREE World Massage Conference broadcast by going here:

Our presentation was the highlight of the Spring 2011 conference. Some of the ideas for promoting your practice were mind-blowing.

In this engaging round table discussion you’ll discover specific and actionable strategies to ensure that your practice stays busy and prosperous. Just like the three R’s you learned in school, there are three R’s for successfully increasing your practice income: Maximizing recruitment, maximizing return visits, and maximizing revenue from each treatment. These are applicable whether you have your own practice or are working for someone else. Find out how you can master these skills and dramatically improve your income.

During this Encore Presentation broadcast, you can join “the four Browns” as we hop into the World Massage Conference chat room to chat with participants personally.

How do I attend this live presentation?

This presentation is absolutely free and it starts tonight at 8pm ET (7pm CT, 6pm MT, 5pm PT). If you are unsure what time it starts in your time zone, look at the countdown clock after logging in.

Build Your Massage Business by Reaching Out, Part 6

When thinking of community outreach we often limit ourselves to thinking of donating our massage services to a worthy cause we believe in.

But any activity that raises the public’s awareness of the benefits of massage therapy in general, and our services in particular would be considered community outreach, so don’t be afraid to think outside the box.

Remember, as massage therapists we are in a unique position in that we have the ability to transform individuals, families and entire communities through both education and compassionate, healing touch. Let us begin a new trend to make America the most cared-for, connected, loved society. And your massage practice will flourish.

It all begins with you….

Build Your Massage Business by Reaching Out, Part 5

Another benefit of getting involved in community service projects is that in many outreach situations (for example, offering your services at the cancer ward of your local hospital) you get to interact with other professionals such as chiropractors, nurses and doctors, physical and occupational therapists, acupuncturists, nutritionists, psychologists etc.

Over the years I have seen a great many long-lasting, mutually beneficial relationships develop as a result of reaching out and filling a need in the community.

What need would you enjoy filling and how might it help you build your massage business?

Build Your Massage Business by Reaching Out, Part 4

If you aren’t already doing so, remember to put information about your community service on your massage website. People will go out of their way to support a professional who is doing good things, especially if it is something that they too believe in. But first they need to know!

Our community projects are also a great chance to educate the public about the benefits of massage in general, which will of course have a positive impact on your practice.

What community projects are you involved with?

Build Your Massage Business by Reaching Out, Part 1

Despite our diversity, human beings need community. We all need to feel loved, to connect with others, and to be touched in a respectful and caring way. This makes life worth living. Yet according to public opinion pioneer, George Gallup, Americans are among the loneliest people in the world. As massage practitioners, we can change this!

Especially during these challenging times, people need help coping with the stresses of life that tend to isolate us. As agents of change this is our time to shine as the caring professionals that we are. It’s time to step up as leaders in our community. Who else has the ability to directly impact stress and suffering the way that we do?

No-Cost Strategies to Give Your Massage Business a Boost! Part 2

So what can you do to maintain a positive attitude, even though (and in fact, in spite of the fact that) you are also feeling the effects of a down economy?

First and foremost it’s more important now than ever before to take care of yourself. Make sure you are getting enough sleep, exercise, healthy food, regular massage, and whatever else you need to stay on top of your game. It’s hard to stay optimistic when you feel tired and run-down.

Also be aware of getting into patterns of negative self talk, and see if you can turn it around. We are often our own greatest saboteurs.

Thinking about Attending a Massage Conference? Part 3

If you decide to attend a massage conference, doing the following will make the experience of attending worth your while.

After the Conference:

1. It’s always ideal if you can plan a day off after the conference to “decompress”, but at the very least do schedule some time for yourself as soon as possible after you get home.

2. Review your notes, and choose 12 things you learned that you want to implement in the next 12 months.

3. Prioritize them in order of importance.

4. Get together with your conference buddy and tell them what you are committing to and how you are going to accomplish that. Their job is to help you be accountable (and you do the same for them).

5. Schedule the time you will need in your planner to accomplish your goals. For example, if you are going to master a new technique you learned, when are you going to practice it and with whom? If you are going to implement a new marketing strategy, when are you going to take the necessary action steps?

6. And don’t forget to follow up with all of the folks whose business cards you collected. A nice way is a simple postcard saying how much you enjoyed meeting them.

If you follow these simple suggestions before, during and after a conference, you will maximize your investment, and take your business to the next level, in addition to having a great time!

Thinking about Attending a Massage Conference? Part 2

Here are some things you can do at a Massage Conference to maximize your investment of time and money.

At the Conference:

1. Have a list of questions handy at each workshop you attend and cross them out as they get answered. If the speaker doesn’t address your specific issues, it is your responsibility to ask.

Many speakers also make themselves available after their presentation to answer specific questions, so don’t be shy about taking advantage of this. They will let you know if there is someplace else they have to be.

2. Do not underestimate the power of peer-to-peer networking. For example, I have seen many mentor/mentee relationships develop at conferences, where a more experienced therapist is only too happy to share her knowledge with someone just getting started in the profession.

With this in mind, do make it a practice to sit next to someone different at each meal, as well as at the presentations, and get to know them.

3. A good attitude to have when it comes to networking is to be a detective when you are listening to someone and try to find a need they have that you can meet. For example, you could tell them about a resource that might help them, or better yet, look for other therapists at the conference that you could introduce them to. People love that.

4. Do have a daily goal of how many business cards you will collect from people you have met. But don’t just collect them for the sake of it – connect with the person first, then write brief notes on the back of their card so that you will remember them. Ideally jot down what they need or a way you can help them.

In the next post I’ll address things that you can do when you get home from the conference. Till then…

Do Massage Therapists Work As Slaves?

Well the recent posting on Massage Success Radio resulted in more email in my inbox than any other blog post EVER!

I guess it’s a hot topic. In case you missed it, I posted a short audio clip of a well-respected chiropractor explaining why he thought massage therapists change people’s lives, but don’t charge enough.

Now, this was recorded prior to the recent economic challenges, but I’ll bet he’d stand by his comments.

Speaking of comments, here are some of yours (names are withheld as I don’t have permission to publish them).

“I would like to charge more but I am competing against fellow massage therapists, so to attract clients I need to charge the same or just a little more.”

“We should probably all raise our prices to what we feel we should charge.”

“I think some of us work as slaves. I do, without choice as my practice is in Jamaica so the exchange rate makes it impossible to charge more.”

“I agree compared to a lot of other professions. But it is such a fine line, charge too much people will go some where else and you may set them up for disappointment. Or charge too little and they think there is something wrong with you, even if the massage was great. Plus it takes some guts to charge more than the rest.”

Its funny how this DC says we don’t charge for what we do . This year the PT and the DC assoc filed a complaint with the wash state L & I  and they told them that we were getting paid too much for our service (118.00 per treatment)… they agreed with them and now we are to get only 88.00 per treatment max. per day.”

“I agree with this chiropractor, but he certainly has an attitude on him.”

Sink Hole De Mayo!!!

cinco_edit.jpg

Or… when life gives you lemons…

A couple of days ago in a busy neighborhood in Seattle a water main broke, causing a LARGE sink hole that completely swallowed two cars that had been unfortunately parked at that particular spot.

The construction crews came and blocked off the area making access to a local restaurant just about impossible. The restaurant had been planning a Cinco De Mayo party this weekend, but instead it was deserted.

Most would have just given up, but not this restaurant. Taking full advantage of all the media attention, they posted a large sign that said SINK HOLE DE MAYO!!!!! Now that’s a sense of humor!

The restaurant still may not have had any customers for a few days, but they were featured on just about every local news station, which can’t be bad for future business. What a great way to get free publicity!

So, when life gives you lemons, what do you do?
