Thinking about Attending a Massage Conference? Part 3

If you decide to attend a massage conference, doing the following will make the experience of attending worth your while.

After the Conference:

1. It’s always ideal if you can plan a day off after the conference to “decompress”, but at the very least do schedule some time for yourself as soon as possible after you get home.

2. Review your notes, and choose 12 things you learned that you want to implement in the next 12 months.

3. Prioritize them in order of importance.

4. Get together with your conference buddy and tell them what you are committing to and how you are going to accomplish that. Their job is to help you be accountable (and you do the same for them).

5. Schedule the time you will need in your planner to accomplish your goals. For example, if you are going to master a new technique you learned, when are you going to practice it and with whom? If you are going to implement a new marketing strategy, when are you going to take the necessary action steps?

6. And don’t forget to follow up with all of the folks whose business cards you collected. A nice way is a simple postcard saying how much you enjoyed meeting them.

If you follow these simple suggestions before, during and after a conference, you will maximize your investment, and take your business to the next level, in addition to having a great time!

Thinking about Attending a Massage Conference? Part 2

Here are some things you can do at a Massage Conference to maximize your investment of time and money.

At the Conference:

1. Have a list of questions handy at each workshop you attend and cross them out as they get answered. If the speaker doesn’t address your specific issues, it is your responsibility to ask.

Many speakers also make themselves available after their presentation to answer specific questions, so don’t be shy about taking advantage of this. They will let you know if there is someplace else they have to be.

2. Do not underestimate the power of peer-to-peer networking. For example, I have seen many mentor/mentee relationships develop at conferences, where a more experienced therapist is only too happy to share her knowledge with someone just getting started in the profession.

With this in mind, do make it a practice to sit next to someone different at each meal, as well as at the presentations, and get to know them.

3. A good attitude to have when it comes to networking is to be a detective when you are listening to someone and try to find a need they have that you can meet. For example, you could tell them about a resource that might help them, or better yet, look for other therapists at the conference that you could introduce them to. People love that.

4. Do have a daily goal of how many business cards you will collect from people you have met. But don’t just collect them for the sake of it – connect with the person first, then write brief notes on the back of their card so that you will remember them. Ideally jot down what they need or a way you can help them.

In the next post I’ll address things that you can do when you get home from the conference. Till then…

Thinking about Attending a Massage Conference? Part 1

Attending a massage conference (or other type of educational conference) is a big commitment of time, energy and money and yet it can be extremely rewarding. голова болит секс

Massage conferences can be a fantastic place to get fresh ideas for your massage business, meet therapists from other areas, and get renewed and re-energized.

Here are some things that you can do before, during and after a conference to maximize your investment and make sure you get the most out of it.

Before the Conference: голова болит секс

1. Make a list of the things you want to accomplish in the next year. For example, you could decide to increase your massage income by 25% by getting and keeping more clients. Then go through the list of available workshops, with your specific goals for the upcoming year in mind, and choose the ones that best fit your needs.

2. Create a list of questions or specific things you want to learn from each speaker.

3. Find a buddy to attend the conference with. In addition to keeping you accountable (more on that later), they may also help you save on travel costs.

4. Decide ahead of time what your budget will be so you can take advantage of the vendors’ conference specials without breaking the bank.

5. Make sure you have a good supply of business cards that clearly state the type of massage you do and your target market if you have one.

Next post I’ll give you some ideas on things to do at the conference.

The Myth of Motivation

motivation_carrot_sm.jpg

I was reading an article by Ken Keis of Consulting Resource Group on The Myth of Motivation and he made a comment I found interesting. He said:

The pursuit of our interests requires no motivation because we enjoy doing them. Interests compel us; to compel means to be pulled or attracted. That precludes the need for motivation. We require motivation only for things that do not interest us. If we need motivation, we must question why we do.

Now, I’m sure that doesn’t mean that we will love every aspect of building a successful massage business. I for one am not a big fan of bookkeeping. But I think it’s true that it is really hard to motivate yourself to do something that you just don’t enjoy.

So if you find you are having a hard time marketing your massage business, maybe take a look at what you are doing. For example, I had a client who was trying unsuccessfully to build her business by public speaking as she had heard that was a great way to get massage clients. And it is! But she hated it (and it was definitely not one of her natural talents).

But it turned out she really enjoyed writing AND she had a real knack for it. So I suggested she focus her marketing efforts on writing articles in local publications instead. And her massage business really took off.

So, if you find you are having a hard time motivating yourself as you build your business, look at what you are doing, and see if there is another approach that includes things that you really enjoy. Then motivation will no longer be an issue.

Step 6 to Staying Motivated and Enthusiastic as You Build the Massage Business of Your Dreams

Take time to smell the roses.

And finally, we get to step number 6. And it is….. Ta Da !…. drum roll please….. Take time to smell the roses by stopping to acknowledge yourself each time you reach one of your benchmark goals. I can’t tell you how often this step is skipped, and how important it is. Acknowledging yourself is a way of affirming that you did it, and deeply nourishes your well-being.

Think about how you would feel if you were climbing a mountain and you never once stopped to survey the vista below or to marvel at how far you had come. All you would see would be the task still ahead, which can be invigorating for a while, but can soon grow tiring.

Acknowledging yourself for what you have accomplished so far, clears the way for you to move on to the next level of success. And it can be something as simple as taking a breath and saying “I did it!”, or it could be a trip to Hawaii! You choose.

So take some time now to think about how you will acknowledge yourself as you reach your key benchmarks on your journey to absolute massage business successs.

And remember…. Have fun along the way.

Step 5 to Staying Motivated and Enthusiastic as You Build the Massage Business of Your Dreams

Have someone who will hold you accountable.

So, let’s say you have set your business goals and intentions, and you have chunked them down into doable actions. However, have you ever noticed how easy it is for us to talk ourselves out of doing what we committed to ourselves that we would do? Let’s face it, who will ever know?

For that reason I highly recommend that you find an accountability partner. Someone who will hold you accountable for what you declare that you will do. If you are already working with a coach they would be the ideal person to do this with. If you are not, then you may want to buddy up with a partner who will hold you accountable until you have actually done what you said you would do.

A word of warning however. Make sure that the person you choose will in fact hold you to your word. Choose someone who will hold your feet to the flame if necessary. It’s OK if you squirm a bit. In the end, when you have the absolute massage business of your dreams, you will thank them for it.

Step 4 to Staying Motivated and Enthusiastic as You Build the Massage Business of Your Dreams

Chunk it down into bite-sized pieces.

I think that there is nothing more disempowering than having a project that is so overwhelming you don’t know where to begin, or so large that you can’t see the progress you are making. Has this ever been your experience too?

For this reason it is helpful to break down your massage business and massage marketing goals into bite-sized chunks that are measurable. It is also good to have ways of acknowledging yourself each time you reach a new benchmark.

So take those large projects and goals and break them down into smaller “stepping stone” goals, with a date by which you plan to achieve each one. And don’t forget to celebrate your successes!

Step 3 to Staying Motivated and Enthusiastic as You Build the Massage Business of Your Dreams

Reward your efforts

It is important to regularly reward not just your results, but also your efforts. So if your goal was to make 10 phone calls, but all you got was voice mail, reward yourself for making the effort. Believe me, in time your efforts will definately pay off.

So, stop now, and make a list of all the different ways you could reward yourself as you build your massage practice. Think of big ways as well as little ways.

Have fun!
